I heard of this truly shocking incident just moments before heading out to the cinema to watch Batman, The Dark Knight Rises.
Films, television and music have been frequently blamed for inspiring singular acts of inexplicable and horrific violence but this is unlikely to provide solace for the victims’ friends and families.
I sincerely hope the media do not rush to sensationalize such a tragic crime by implicating the film itself, its themes and content or those involved in its making.

I agree. Thank you for posting this. It is such a horrible tragic event with nobody to blame but the shooter. Our thoughts should be of healing and comfort.
Thanks Juliette. It’s such a terrible thing, foremost for those directly involved but I also feel sad for Christopher Nolan and his crew, such a lot of hard work and a brilliant film. It would be such a shame if this is the only thing people associate it with.
What a tragedy. This guy will get his 15 minutes of fame but he wasn’t ‘brave’ enough to take his own life at the end of it, like most of the other lunatics that have gone on these rampages. It is sad that some people think life is so insignificant.
I am baffled by anyone who could do such a thing. Sad and purposeless. xx
I was at the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises here in San Francisco, and I wasn’t aware of these horrific shootings until this morning. So far, it does not seem that people are implicating the film, although I see in Paris all screenings have been canceled for the immediate future. I think people realize that these awful acts of violence can happen anywhere. What people should really be concerned about is this type of thing is happening with more and more regularity, especially here in the States with our stupid, stupid cult of guns.
I wondered if screenings would be pulled in light of this incident.
You are right, Stephen. Weapons should not be glamourised, especially when there are those who see strength in them when their minds are weak.
An early screening of a 12A movie is obviously going to be an event full of fanboys/girls of all ages, I can’t imagine what could motivate someone to target such innocent victims. I thought the movie was brilliant and I’ll be encouraging everyone I know to see it
Hi Lily,
I loved it … it thought it was a supremely satisfying conclusion to Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and like you I’m encouraging everyone I know to see it> but it makes me really sad to see something that was so happily anticipated by so many people is now being overshadowed by this senseless act of violence.
Yeah, too true. Nolan has my sympathy. I’m reclaiming The Dark Knight Rises for passive Nerds like myself
solidarity, sister!!! i’m right there with ya!!!
Nothing is to blame but the individual however, I must say that when I caught a glimpse of the trailer, I thought it had a very dark and evil energy. This is my opinion.
The whole trilogy has dealt with some very dark themes but it did end with a satisfying and surprising amount of selfless heroism and positivity – oh, no… was that a spoiler. Thankfully these films have always promoted hope but have gone to some pretty dark places to do that. You are right about blaming the individual, if someone has such capabilities within them they probably need little or no stimulation to eventually act. It’s such a shame, xx
Very thoughtful post. Sensationalizing the shooting, and tying it to the movie is misguided and will only encourage copy cats. It’s obvious that is what the shooter wants, joker mask etc.
Thanks Alison, targeting the fan/movie-going community is absolutely senseless. Fortunately, bar the most lowbrow papers, comments seem to focus on the facts and the victims rather than the film. It’s such a shame that some premiers of the film have been pulled in fear of further copycats, we’ll never know now whether it would have broken records. xx
I agree some people will blame pop culture and art for creating these morons. but a person’s mental state will affect his/her own behavior. This is clearly a deranged mind, but we cannot give this person want he wants–notoriety. Keep living and experiencing art which always explores the light and dark in life.
Absolutely, thanks for commenting Ripley xx
