The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey gave us only the briefest glimpse of Sauron, as The Necromancer – motion-captured by Smaug actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
In the meantime here are some very creative suggestions as to what Peter Jackson may have in store.

It would be lovely if Jackson portrayed Sauron in some humanoid form, in line with the noble elves & whatnot. I doubt that the next two installations of the Hobbit will show anything other than the fuzzy shadowing thing in Unexpected Journey. As far as I remember, reading (or trying to) the Silmarillion (I was so young to ever think of understanding/appreciating it), Sauron had lost his earthly body long before the Hobbit & long before that. It’s been since the 70′s since I read The Hobbit in its entirety. Watching it was like relearning riding a bike (something which I’ll never do).
You are valued Lily Wight, sorry to be so out of contact. I will repent.
Hello Marc x Your memory serves you well, I believe Sauron lost his ability to take humanoid form when he lost the ring. One of the DVD extras on The Return Of The King features an interview with Jackson in which he presents unused test-footage of an “angelic” Sauron – which is very tantalising!
I’m quite sure that re-reading The Hobbit will be much easier and safer than riding a bike
