A Spring Equinox Tarot reading is a great way to focus thoughts and consolidate plans for the rest of the year.  The deck, as usual, is Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot drawn according to the recommended Lunatic Spread.  Position 1. is left-middle then count anti-clockwise.

Position 1.  The Enquirer/Present Day ~ The Nine Of Wands

The previous spread finished with The Nine Of Wands inverted in Position 9. followed by significant obstacles and trials courtesy of The Devil in Position 10.  The Nine of Wands appears once more, only this time the right way up: The Enquirer is not out of the woods yet but their situation is much improved.  A maze of barriers, perhaps self-imposed, remain in place but with patience and perseverance inner strength and purpose will return.  A single steady flame of inspiration is now burning and will guide the way back from solitude.

Position 2.  Past Influences ~ The King Of Cups (inverted)

Focus has been upon a mature and artistic man, possibly fair and of a large build.  This is a man who can be ruthless and calculating when prioritising his domestic life over the responsibilities of work.  At worst he is hot-tempered with an addictive personality and a great capacity to take his pain out on both himself and others.  The King’s shortcomings are motivated by anxiety and lack of security but The Enquirer feels mistreated and should escape this relationship by refusing to accept what is less than correct in others.

Position 3.  Subconscious (unknown) Influences ~ The Page Of Pentacles

The Enquirer frequently draws Pentacles in the “hidden/internal” part of the spread suggesting hidden reserves of practicality and material needs whilst Court Cards often represent a specific individual.  The Page has a young head on old shoulders.  He is ambitious and enquiring with a strong sense of duty and a desire to rise to the top of his profession.  He has a tendency to be serious but he champions health and wealth, encouraging The Enquirer not to bottle-up the things she needs to say.

Position 4.  Secret Wishes & Desires ~ The Emperor (inverted)

A Major Arcana card appears here indicating a potent desire.  The Enquirer wishes to shun the responsibilities which come with a role of authority.  Self-confidence has waned, compromising the desire for achievement.  The Enquirer wants to be treated with more respect whilst hiding the distrust that has come from recent hurt.  The King Of Cups is likely to blame but The Page Of Pentacles strives for more influence and a genuine allegiance.

Position 5.  Hidden (external) Forces ~ The Lovers (inverted)

An emotional issue of conflict and division troubles The Enquirer to the point of obsession.  Issues feel unresolved and The Enquirer is racked with indecision.  Sometimes however a broken relationship can be a blessing in disguise – The Lovers offer unity if confrontation is put aside for emotional fulfillment.  Surrounding forces and The Enquirer’s own secret wish urge letting go of this situation.

Position 6.  Events To Come ~ The Page Of Swords

The Page Of Swords is rational, dynamic and articulate.  He encourages The Enquirer to turn anger, caused by keeping other’s secrets, into something more positive.  The Page ushers in an eventful period during which obstacles can be cut down and ideas can grow.  He will not be deterred by anything negative he thinks or hears.  He values truth and clarity and will encourage The Enquirer to follow his lead.

Position 7.  The Surrounding Environment ~ The Knight Of Cups

The old King Of Cups may be on his way out but two Pages and now a Knight have stepped-up to bolster The Enquirer in person or else by example.  Questing Knights and Pages represent incoming or outgoing change; suggesting a new phase and an environment full of possibilities.  The Knight Of Cups offers social invitations, births or marriages are possible, this is a romantic time for loving and sharing.

Position 8.  The Influence Of Others ~ The King Of Pentacles

Half the cards in this spread are male Court Cards!  This suggests that a number of positive and diverse male friends, colleagues and role-models have rushed in to fill the void and ease the damage done by The King Of Cups.  The King Of Pentacles “trumps” the Knight and Pages: exerting a very specific influence.  This is a mature man in a position of authority, he is placid and stable in nature (if stubborn).  He holds out the possibility of validation to The Enquirer.

Position 9.  Spiritual Forces ~ The Ten Of Cups (inverted)

The Ten Of Cups is always fortunate, even upside-down.  It represents unity and harmony amongst groups of  family and friends.  Final acceptance of an emotional situation allows for a new beginning and building a better relationship with yourself helps you have better relationships with others.  The Enquirer must always be mindful but not vulnerable to potential strife in relationships.  This is a time to revel in new friends.

Position 10.  Final Outcome ~ The Ace Of Swords

In the hands of The Ace the sword becomes a tool of breakthrough success.  The Enquirer is unstoppable.  There will be a period of action – even struggle – and such glorious liberation can require sacrifice.  An old way of life will come to an end and a peaceful time, with plenty of practical and emotional support will begin.

Beltane (meaning “bright fire”) or May Day is one of eight festival days marked upon the ancient seasonal calendar known as The Wheel Of The Year.

Beltane heralds the beginning of Summer as it lies halfway between The Spring Equinox (Ostara) and The Summer Solstice (Litha).  It is a time when daylight hours are long, trees blossom and herding animals are turned out to pasture.

Beltane was originally observed by the Gaelic people of Ireland, Scotland and The Isle Of Man who performed protective rituals for their crops and livestock whilst The Celtic Tribes of Western Europe and Britain also celebrated mating rituals and male potency.

Beltane is named for the Celtic Sun God, Bel (Belenos/Belenus) who is associated with West Cornwall, formerly Belerion.  The Romans dubbed him the “British Apollo” and – like many solar deities – he carries the sun in his chariot and is associated with inspirational light and healing waters.

Beltane also celebrates The Spirit Of The Greenwood in the guise of The Green Man; known variously as The Celtic Antlered-God Cernunnos, Herne The Hunter, Jack-In-The-Green and even Robin Hood.  Cernunnos consorts with The Mother Goddess at Beltane to assure the birth of the following Spring from the dead of Winter.

Collecting May blossoms or “bringing in the May” is a euphemism for this time of sexual licence.  Beltane remains a popular time for marriage ceremonies and traditional handfastings.

Jumping over a broomstick on May Day symbolises crossing the threshold from Spring to Summer and combines the masculine (handle) with the feminine (brush)… no sniggering at the back please ;)

Dancing around Maypoles at Beltane is still practiced today throughout Europe, Scandinavia and The British Isles.  The origins of this tradition are lost but Folklorists believe the pole represents the ancient reverence for sacred trees or a phallic symbol!

Pre-Roman tribes danced and walked themselves and their herds around or between protective Beltane fires.  These bonfire celebrations are enjoying a modern revival attracting fire-eaters and coal-walking.

It is always beneficial to keep a visual and written record of your Tarot spreads as a means to spot shifting phases and emerging patterns.

The following readings were taken at Yule (December 2012 – left) and Imbolc (February 2013 – right).  They cover general trends for The Enquirer

up to Ostara (20th March 2013).

The photographs are posted throughout for reference and again in a larger size at the end of the reading.

Imbolc 2013Yule 2012

1.   The Enquirer/The Present – The Seven Of Swords (Yule) > The Eight Of Swords inverted (Imbolc)

The numerical progression is obvious and the images show that The Enquirer has inadvertently escaped from an untenable position.  The Acrobat (Yule) has become inactive and endangered by the stresses and anxieties of multi-tasking but the realisation that we can be “our own worst enemy”  engenders the strength to let go of unhealthy situations.

By trusting to destiny and “going with the flow” The Enquirer has submitted to a fortuitous fall: an escape from a self-imposed prison (The Eight Of Swords).  It’s still dangerous out there, one might land safely or fall on a sword, but this is freedom and an end to frustration.  The Enquirer is at last free to act.

2.   Past Influences – The Four Of Wands (Yule) > JUDGEMENT (Imbolc)

The Four Of Wands denotes that the hope of domestic harmony, especiallyYule 2012 within a romantic partnership, is a primary influence that has contributed to The Enquirer feeling over-extended, especially in the run-up to the Christmas period.

JUDGEMENT’S appearance in early Spring suggests a major transformation; positive new influences instigating a new lifestyle and renewed purpose.  The Enquirer has done their duty well, their conscience is clear and a new beginning – following that fall from the tower (The Eight Of Swords) –  is assured.

3.   Subconscious Influences – The Three Of Wands inverted (Yule) > THE HANGED MAN inverted (Imbolc)

Inspiration hibernates for Winter!  The Enquirer feels lacking in resources; low and tired; an inevitable consequence of trying to balance all those swords!  (Position 1.  The Seven of Swords (Yule))

The sense of waiting and inaction continues into the Spring with THE HANGED MAN.  The figure depicted has been tethered by self-punishment and/or the emotional manipulation of others but has realised the need to end stagnation.  Letting go of the past, looking at the world in a new way and allowing events to run their course will free THE HANGED MAN for that fall/escape from the tower (Position 1.  The Eight Of Swords, Imbolc).

4.   Secret Wishes & Desires – THE TOWER (Yule) > THE EMPEROR (Imbolc)

The Enquirer is wishing for an apocalyptic “light-bulb moment”: a sudden destructive act that will sweep away old ideas and habits.  This is a wish destined to come true because, by Imbolc, the dramatic fall pictured in THE TOWER has evolved into a free-fall from entrapment (Position 1.  The Eight Of Swords).

Imbolc 2013Major Arcana cards in Position 4 suggest The Enquirer is strongly motivated by desire.  Come Spring there is a wish to rely on a strong, practical and authoritative man or else to adopt an ambitious and confident aspect.  The desire is for improved status and success.

5.   Hidden Forces - The King Of Swords (Yule) > THE HIGH PRIESTESS inverted (Imbolc)

Court cards are likely to represent specific individuals.  At Christmastime The Enquirer has a mature, pro-active man in their corner whose serene detachment and dogged determination is an inspiration: possibly a lawmaker.

As a new year begins The Enquirer is unwittingly burdened and repressed by the secrets of others.  There is a sense of isolation and frustration following emotional wounding and too much time spent caring for others.  It would be best to adopt a few characteristics from THE EMPEROR (Position 4).

6.   Events To Come – The Six Of Cups inverted (Yule) >The Knight Of Cups inverted (Imbolc)

Here comes a negative nostalgia trip but it’s time to take off those rose-tinted glasses and let go of something or someone disappointing.  It is time to grow up move on.

The Knight heralds closure on a relationship with a faithless and immoral man who has become an emotional drain.  This “letting go” will be eventful, painful but beneficial and set to come to a head before the end of March.

7.   The Surrounding Environment – The Ten Of Cups inverted (Yule) > THE HIEROPHANT inverted (Imbolc)Yule 2012

The inverted Ten suggests imbalance and family strife – hardly surprising over Christmas and New Year!  The Enquirer has suffered a loss (Position 6.) and is encouraged to prioritise their relationship with themselves and then embrace the unorthodox environment they inhabit (THE HIEROPHANT).

The Enquirer needs to develop their willpower, embrace their individuality and reject negative influences.  The inverted HIEROPHANT rules an environment where truth will not be compromised and the head rules the heart.

So far THE HIEROPHANT, THE HIGH PRIESTESS and THE EMPEROR have appeared.  THE EMPRESS is missing.  This is the “self” The Enquirer needs to find.

8.   The Influence Of Others – The Ten Of Wands inverted (Yule) >The Four Of Swords (Imbolc)

Cards 6 – 8 (Yule) recommend a reflective period of peace and solitude.  The figure (The Ten Of Wands) has become stagnant and unstable carrying other people’s burdens.  End this cycle and drop those wands!

Spring brings a more positive influence; a peaceful interlude, a chance to re-energise and some space to nurture an idea.  Problems can finally be identified but good health relies on ignoring any negative remarks or comments.

9.   Spiritual Forces – The King Of Pentacles (Yule) > The Nine Of Wands inverted (Imbolc)

Imbolc 2013The Enquirer has another King, a strong, mature and dependable man on their side.  This one is a stubborn realist with a practical approach to removing obstacles: exactly what is required.

Nines are ruled by THE HERMIT so The Enquirer has stalled on the edge of a new phase imagining the world is against them.  Get up, get going and trust the support of The King Of Pentacles!

10.  Final Outcome – The Nine Of Swords inverted (Yule) > THE DEVIL (Imbolc)

The picture on The Nine says it all.  This is the card of stress, anxiety, needless self-punishment and the realisation that we are all, essentially, alone.  Drawing the card upside-down suggests this temporary, even illusory state will soon be over.

Overall, the Yule spread suggests an almost self-destructive desire to escape from pain caused by the burdens of others.  The Enquirer has support from two significant men and has identified the need to let go and recuperate.  This is something easier to say than to do.

By Imbolc identifying a specific problem has led to freedom; with mighty JUDGEMENT suggesting a dramatic positive change has occurred simply by allowing things to run their course.  THE DEVIL encourages The Enquirer to enjoy their rest for this new-found independence will soon be tested.

Spring is not a good time to make major decisions and life changes but a time to maintain balance.  The Enquirer’s personal demons – obsessive behaviour, chasing the wrong dream, focusing on the negative and tending to self-punishment – must be kept in check.  Major lifestyle overhauls must be fought for and THE DEVIL reminds us not to be complacent.

Ostara (Old High German) or Ēostre (Old English) falls upon 20th March 2013.  It is one of eight ancient Wheel Of The Year festivals denoting seasonal shifts.

Ostara marks The Vernal (meaning “youthful”) Equinox: the height of Spring.

Daylight and darkness are balanced at The Equinox, prior to the lengthening of days: a period sometimes referred to as Lent.  It is a time to celebrate fecundity and growth.

Ostara is named for an ancient Germanic goddess and the month that bears her name; Ôstarmânoth, now April.

Ostara is a dawn goddess associated to the Greek Eos and the Roman Aurora.  She represents the resurrection of light following the death of Winter.

Ostara’s totem animal is the hare: a symbol of fertility dating back to prehistoric times.  The hare was admired for its enthusiastic mating rituals and it’s associations to moon goddesses and the female reproductive cycle.

Eggs are an ancient symbol of renewal, fertility and life-force.  They can be decorated to represent the wishes we hope will manifest in the coming summer.

Eggs were used to play a number of festival games such as treasure hunts, races and relays (our modern egg and spoon race).

Ostara is a solar festival so bonfires, hearth fires and candles can also be lit.

The daffodil or “harbinger of Spring” is the traditional flower of the Ostara festival.

Imbolc (pronounced i-MOLK meaning “in the belly”) observed 2nd February for 2013, is one of eight seasonal festivals marked on the ancient calendar known as The Wheel Of The Year.

Imbolc heralds the first stirrings of  Spring as it lies halfway between The Winter Solstice (Yule) and The Spring Equinox (Ostara).  It is a time when days lengthen, new buds and shoots appear and the first lambs are born.

Imbolc was originally observed by the Gaelic (Irish, Scottish and Manx) people as a vital indicator of a new agricultural year.

The festival was deemed sacred to the Gaelic goddess Brighid (pronounced breed) the midwife of the year and protector of women, children and newborns.

Hearthfire celebrations involved the baking of bannocks; the origin of Pancake Day.

Corn Dollies and Brighid’s crosses would be made from dried stalks, reeds and rushes to bless the coming season.

Imbolc was a time for weather forecasting.  Watching for snakes or badgers to emerge precedes the North American tradition of Groundhog Day.

     Virgin Blogger (published 27/2/12).

Maybe innocence rallied support, or perhaps it’s because it has the word “virgin” in the title.  Whatever the reason The Arcade Of Arts & Arcana’s very first blog adventure made it into the top five posts of the year list…

“Dear Blogsprites,

I always thought that keyboards were for making music and that hard-drives were arduous road-trips.

As soon as I start to navigate my way around the lovely WordPress I will launch my Mission Statement.

In the meantime here is a lovely picture…”

The “lovely picture” refers, of course, to The Eight Of Cups from Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot.  A picture, that for many, has become the “face” of Lily Wight.

I can never thank Patrick enough for graciously granting his permission to use this image.  You will always find a link to the Deviant Moon website in the sidebar at www.lilywight.com.

Samhain (or Halloween) was the original Celtic New Year’s Eve so it is fitting to consider this the last spread of the year and take a look back at readings from previous festival days.

The deck – as always – is Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot.

Samhain Tarot Spread at www.lilywight.com

     Centre left then anti-clockwise

     1.  The Inquirer In The Present ~ The Ace Of Pentacles.  The inverted Ace suggests uncertainty and a lack of focus in both the cards and the inquirer.  There is a strong, yet thwarted, desire to grasp control of the environment without any sense of fulfillment.  The card suggests false starts and false happiness.

Card readings throughout 2012 charted the evolution of dramatic change with The Ace Of Pentacles first appearing as a positive internal influence back in May.  The momentum to make major life-changes has waned and The Inquirer seems to be hanging on to the wrong things.

     2.  Past Influences ~ The Six Of Swords.  The Inquirer felt trapped in an environment of conflict and wished to escape and find peace.  There is however a clear assertion in the card’s inverted position: “I choose to stay with my problems”.  There is hope that patience and determination will improve close relationships and end feelings of solitude.

     3.  Subconscious Influences ~ The Sun.  This Major Arcana card represents an absolute surrender to joy that is childlike in its pure and unfailing trust in happiness and renewal.  The bright light within is more than a match for the difficult challenges and unwanted circumstances that surround it.

This is the first and only time this card has been drawn this year.  A reminder that, in the depths of winter, there is nothing more vital than the light inside!

     4.  Secret Wishes & Desires ~ The Seven Of Cups.  Throughout 2012 desires have tended towards the tangible and practical but The Seven is a card of imagination and daydreams.  The Seven first appeared as an external intangible force in March, suggesting an evolving feeling that has become a specific wish.

Combining mental control with creativity to achieve better balance will reveal that happiness can come from many places (and not necessarily the cup you’ve chosen!)  The adjacent Sun insists that true joy resides within.

     5.  Hidden Forces ~ Temperance.  Here she is again!  The Major Arcana’s symbol of metaphysical harmony appearing as a personal guardian in exactly the same place as the previous Mabon spread (September).  This is a tough spread but The Sun (position 3, within) and Temperance (without) empower and protect the artist (position 4) against all that life can throw at her.

Strive constantly for balance and trust the higher self.

     6.  Events To Come ~ The Devil.  The Devil encourages us to become the best version of ourselves by testing our mettle.  He also warns us that things may not be as they seem and gives us the opportunity to change course before it is too late.

When a permanent or pleasurable situation turns sour we tend to fall-back on our baser instincts.  It is temperance that counters the mundane desires and low behaviour that accompany trying times so thank goodness she appears in position 5; reminding The Inquirer they have everything they need to pass the coming tests.

     7.  Surrounding Environment ~ The Eight Of Cups.  Lily Wight herself has appeared but upside-down!  Lily has seven full cups behind her but she still seeks that elusive eighth cup whilst constantly looking over her shoulder!    Such a futile endeavour costs emotional strength but wisdom will be found in rest and stillness.  The Inquirer has an opportunity to change their usual responses and to reflect upon what is good and solid in life.

     8.  The Influence Of Others ~ The Hierophant.  This is a highly contentious Major Arcana card.  In the last spread he appeared upside-down as “The Final Outcome” suggesting an unorthodox – even dogmatic – stance was required.  Here he suggests a charismatic male authority figure, at best a guide and teacher, at worst someone repressive and controlling.

Throughout the year the influence of others has been predominantly negative and of too much import with the exception of August (when there was lively and convivial company during a period of leisure).  The Inquirer has been constantly encouraged to rely on their own resources and trust in both their own judgement and metaphysical order.

     9.  Spiritual Forces ~ The Moon.  It is interesting that both The Sun (upright, masculine, internal) and The Moon (upside-down, female, external) appear in this spread.  Temperance (often equated to The Angel Michael) and The Devil (The Angel Lucifer) might also be regarded as opposites.  By conflicting and cancelling each other out these pairs add to the confusion and lack of focus indicated by The Ace in position 1.  They also suggest problems for partners with different lifestyles.

The inverted moon warns The Inquirer to be alert for disillusionment, fear and betrayal which could lead to depression.  Intuition itself is being tested (thanks to The Devil!) and the best way through is to adjust expectations and keep a firm grip of reality.  (The Ace Of Pentacles in position 1. is depicted doing just that but unfortunately the card is upside-down so The Inquirer is hanging-on to the wrong reality!)

2012 has offered up a continual struggle against circumstances.  The Moon suggests we must accept things the way that they are before we can change them.

     10.  Final Outcome ~ The King Of Cups.  In the most literal sense The King Of Cups is a mature, free-thinking professional man.  Born under a water-sign he is emotionally deep but prone to be secretive and unpredictable – such attributes are intensified due to his proximity to The Moon.  It appears that The Inquirer is waiting for information or a decision from this man.

Overall the cards express a continuing push and pull of confusion whilst highlighting the potential for self-fulfillment; blessed by Temperance and burning brightly within.  Whatever will the Yule reading bring?

     Hello Blogsprites,

It’s a little later than promised – so much to post about this month! – but here is my own personal Tarot reading offering insight into general trends from September through to the end of October (Samhain in the Celtic calendar).

Do feel free to offer your comments, no experience required :)

1.  The Inquirer In The Present ~ The Knight Of Wands.

In my previous spread for Lughnasadh The Ten Of Swords appeared in the first position depicting an unhappy soul trapped in a box of swords.  I am – for want of a better expression – clearly out of my box!  The Knight stands at a crossroad.  He can be gullible and prone to hastiness.  He is brandishing a brilliant idea but has no idea where to go or what to do with it.

2.  Past Influences ~ The Four Of Wands.

Work and domestic partnerships have dominated since Midsummer.  Stability is important but sometimes stifling.  The Knight Of Wands suggests it is time for a (cautious) breakthrough adventure.

Cards 3,4 and 5 represent the “inner” portion of the spread; pertaining to personal thoughts and feelings.

3.  Subconscious Influences ~ The Seven Of Pentacles.

At Midsummer this card appeared in position 7 – The Surrounding Environment.  This tells me I am powerfully influenced by external circumstances, perhaps too much.  The Seven represents traditional feminine wants and needs, the virtue of patience and the comfort promised by practical and material success.

4.  Secret Wishes & Desires ~ The Two Of Pentacles.

The desire to be an effortless multi-tasker!  Pentacles frequently dominate the 3 and 4 positions in my spreads; a constant reminder that I can get “stuck-in-the-mud” with earthy practical issues whilst harbouring the potential to turn myself into a piggy bank!  (Would someone give me a shake or fetch a hammer, please?)

5.  Hidden Forces ~ Temperance.

This Major Arcana card feels like a blessing!  If The Two Of Pentacles (4) represents a struggle for balance in the mundane world then Temperance represents enlightenment through achieving balance in a metaphysical sense.  Temperance takes all the elements of a life; home, family, work, friends, romance, dreams, etc. and creates a potent chemical reaction by re-combining them for a better result.  Harmony through endeavour is on my side.

6.  Events To Come ~ The Six Of Cups.

This card appeared in exactly the same position in my last spread!  It represents a “blast from the past” and it would seem to refer to a very specific joyous event.

Cards 7,8 and 9 represent the “external” portion of the spread; pertaining to the world about me.

7.  The Surrounding Environment ~ The Magician.

Balance is a recurring theme throughout this reading.  The Magician is discovering how to utilise his skills to effect his environment in a positive way.

He must learn to see past the illusions of negative influence and there is a warning here not to allow external circumstances to crush inner serenity.

8.  The Influence Of Others ~  The Eight Of Pentacles.

This card might be called “The Apprentice” (The Magician is a kind of apprentice too!)  I have definitely begun a new and exciting project but I could benefit greatly from the right mentors, guides and teachers.

9.  Spiritual Forces ~ Death.

I have a very healthy relationship with Death.  In my last reading Death was my Final Outcome (position 10) the transformation that allowed me to break out of that box (see above 1.  The Knight Of Wands).  The power to maintain and continue this transformation now surrounds me alongside that other great Force: Temperance.  The Magician and the apprentice nearby suggest the beginnings of radical change through hard work.

10.  The Final Outcome ~ The Hierophant (drawn upside down).

Another Major Arcana card hammers home that October is an important time for me.  Death and The Hierophant side-by-side represent a profound transformation of beliefs and the opportunity to be truly unorthodox.

Undergoing trials with temperance leads to wisdom and balance.  We must not shun or fear change because it is new and hard.

Professionals, amateurs and curious beginners are welcome to add their thoughts and comments on this 1st August 2012 spread asking for general insights until the Autumnal Equinox.

Overview (start middle left and count anti-clockwise)

1.  The Inquirer/The Present ~ The Ten Of Swords.  Invasion of security/privacy.  The scars we earn enable us to provide wise counsel.

2.  Past Influences ~ The Emperor.  Mixed aspects of secular power and material/practical concerns.

3.  Subconcious Influences  ~ The Eight Of Cups.  Follow your heart.  The ongoing quest for emotional fulfillment.

4.  Secret Desire/Wishes ~ The Three Of Wands.  The growth of an idea.

5.  Hidden Forces ~ The Three Of Swords.  Pain/loss/destruction can be a source of strength.

6.  Events To Come ~ The Six Of Cups.  A trip down Memory Lane.

7.  Surrounding Environment ~ The Seven Of Pentacles.  Patience and hard work.

8.  The Influence Of Others ~ The Ace Of Cups.  Pleasure and inspiration.

9.  Spiritual Forces ~ The Fool.  A fresh start with equal joy and danger.

10.  Final Outcome ~ Death.  Unexpected change and self-resurrection.

Wow.  The grouping of Death (Major Arcana) flanked by The Fool (Major Arcana) and The Ten of Swords dominates this spread.  Death and The Ten side-by-side signify ferocious – even violent – upheaval, with The Fool promising an absolute fresh start.  Rebirth is painful, but necessary to break out of that box in position 1!

The Emperor (2) has been oppressive instead of benign leading to tangible entrapment (1).  The past couple of months have belonged to corrupt words and secular desires instead of action.

Inside (3 and 4) is an emotional drive to follow an inspirational idea.  The Eight Of Cups (3) the card that represents this site and it’s author, appeared in position 10 in May.  The true self should always be the ultimate outcome yet here she is diminished.  The seed of an idea, already planted (4) is the key to her release.  The Eight is constantly questing for that one fulfilling cup, held perhaps by The Ace – representing the influence of generous and positive “others” in position 8.

Self-inflicted pain can be debilitating but The Three Of Swords (5) remains stable on her three legs, reminding us that scars can mean strength.  The Fool (9) reiterates that we should travel light and jettison the painful baggage that no longer serves us.

A nostalgic event, possibly celebratory marks the shift from present to future (6).  What follow is a period of hard-work, demanding patience.  The Seven Of Pentacles (7) shows a figure waiting for the seed she has planted to grow to fruitfulness – perhaps the seed planted by The Three Of Wands in position 4!

The Ace of Cups casts her inspirational light over the coming weeks.  This spread is full of little hints to follow the heart, trust one’s instincts and look for support in the metaphysical rather than the secular realm.

Then there is Death and The Fool,  the surest sign of a cataclysmic new beginning.  It’s going to be big.  It’s going to be dramatic, but it is going to be for the best.

It is the longest (and quite possibly the wettest) day of the year and a fine time to treat myself to some free therapy with a personal Tarot reading.  I have a very pragmatic and distinctly non-mystical approach to The Tarot and you can click this smiley link for a post outlining my views :)

As always I use Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot (Lunatic Spread… how appropriate!).  You will find a link to Patrick’s website if you scroll down the sidebar on my homepage.

I looked for insights into the period between the current Summer Solstice and Lughnasadh (1st August 2012).

     Read cards anti-clockwise (widdershins) from left centre;

     1.  The Inquirer/Present Day ~ The Hanged Man (Major Arcana)

     2.  Past Influences ~ The Six of Wands

     3.  Subconscious Influences ~ The Queen of Pentacles

     4.  Secret Desires & Wishes ~ The King of Pentacles

     5.  Hidden (External) Forces ~ The Nine of Swords

     6.  Events Yet To Come ~ The Star (Major Arcana)

     7.  Surrounding Environment ~ The Six of Pentacles

     8.  Influence Of Others ~ The Seven of Wands

     9.  Spiritual Forces ~ The Two of Swords

     10.  Final Outcome ~ The Page of Wands

     I would be grateful for any insights, you don’t have to be a Tarot reader: every picture tells a story!  My own interpretation is very detailed but I have included some highlights below;

     Overview

There are only two Major Arcana cards so this is not a particularly auspicious time but the placing of the cards suggests I am in a fixed and specific state with an important, fortunate and enlightening event to come.  These cards are opposite each other in the spread, suggesting an obstacle-strewn shift from one place to the other.

There are no Cup cards!  My previous Beltane (May 2012) spread was devoid of Swords so my former lack of action has evolved into a lack of emotional fulfillment.

Back in May The Page of Wands appeared in position 7.  He has been loitering in my environment and will finally become my main focus at the beginning of August.  (There are two males, one from my close family and one from my professional life who are suggested by this card so business, home-life or perhaps both will dominate my Summer).

The Six of Wands also stood out for me because this card appeared in exactly the same position in my Vernal Equinox spread (March 2012).  It is reminding me of a personal heroic emergence after a period of struggle.  The blooming celebrant is holding an illuminating wand, a symbol of intuition and hope, something I’ll use again to escape the unexpected events and negative influences implied by the tangled forest at position 8!

I don’t need the Tarot to tell me I can be my own worst enemy.  As The Hangman (position 1) I am trapped in a state of suspension (taunted by that little ticking pocket-watch) and The Nine of Swords (the very embodiment of obstacles!) reveals my own personal demons (I like to call them Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Self-Doubt) pictorially gnawing away at me.  Those swords however make a ladder because challenges can be the making of us and opportunity can be born of failure.  The Hangman is serene and full of grace despite his dilemma so I aspire to be more like him.  It’s a time to just live in the present and work on getting some Cup cards back into future spreads.

I rely on Tarot readings to clarify what I feel I already know but there is always a surprise.  Just look at that power-couple: The King and Queen of Pentacles side-by-side and buried deep in my subconscious.  No matter how evolved and esoteric we like to think we are practical primal desires for security, wealth and all the good things in life bubble beneath.  It’s all about balance (I guess if I ever achieve that it will be the end of my Tarot journey).

Deviant Moon is a cheeky deck.  Mine often makes a joke at my expense.  A very straightforward, traditional Gypsy-style, reading would suggest The King of Pentacles, my secret desire, is a rich, powerful and influential mature man with dark hair and eyes, perhaps a Gemini.  I laid the spread the spread the same day I discovered that Johnny Depp had officially confirmed his split from long-term partner Vanessa Paradis.  You work it out ;)

They're the most adorable plushy's I've seen along side Skelanimals. (Vamplets) These little blood suckers, werewolves, monsters, etc., make me want to hug my skully to death.

o,.,o Wait no! If I do that then my poor skelanimal bat will then be left without a head. Now if only I could fall into a bed of my Diego skelanimal bat with little vamplets.

Here is one more She-Fool I found made by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. I like that there is a fox instead of a dog, and the symbolism of the three monkeys is very nice. You can see the whole Shadowscapes deck here.

This May Day reading, with Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot was insightful as always; a timely reminder to trust one’s instincts and take more care over prioritising.

Turning over this site’s “personal” card  (position 10.) The Eight of Cups, shouldn’t be a surprise by now but it is always a pleasant surprise to see “Lily” shunning the negatives, stepping bravely forward on her creative path and chasing the dream!

Please feel free to leave your thoughts on this spread, you don’t need to be an expert, the pictures tell a story, so have a go and leave your comments.

Here as promised.

As with any Supergroup or side project involving big names there is the added pressure to succeed or at least, you'd hope, sound good. Metallica and Lou Reed failed at even this, most pedestrian of accomplishments. Chickenfoot, Black Country Communion and Adrenaline Mob are all concurrent bands among many that have stared down the barrel of Supergroup hype.

Although this is a bit different from what I usually post, I came upon this picture on the internet and just had to share. I have read and watched a lot on the subject of the undead and vampires, and even read about this cage over graves before. However, I have never actually seen a picture of one before and found it unique.

I found this fantastic artwork on DevianArt. It's made by hellobaby, such a talented artist. You can see her work here.

Did you noticed that the Fool is a girl? I love that. And this gorgeous outfit she made, wow ! I would use her deck if she decides to make it, don't you? The only thing I would change is that I will remove the upper frame.

If you are looking for something to peruse whilst you eat your Easter chocs I would recommend April’s Magickal Thing; the collected art of the talented and inspirational Froud family.

If you have seen Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal you are already familiar with Brian Froud‘s unique style (and David Bowie’s equally unique tights).

To celebrate all things Faerie I’ll be featuring a link to The Realm of Froud in the sidebar of my home page all month.

Don’t forget that the Disney backed television series Once Upon A Time premiers on Channel 5 in the U.K. tonight!

P.S.  A little extra treat, a Froud inspired animated curio (view it all on YouTube) …

     Hello Blogsprites!

I hope you are enjoying the Spring sunshine.

It seems that some of my fellow Tarot readers are not familiar with the Deviant Moon spread I tried out for my Ostara personal reading.  I have been asked to include some extra details to assist their kind interpretations.

I focused on a general enquiry regarding my progress through the year relating to a new creative venture.

     1.  The Inquirer, Present Day ~ The Magus

     2.  Past Influences ~ The Six of Wands

     3.  Subconscious Influences ~ The King of Wands

     4.  Secret Desires & Wishes ~ The King of Swords

     5.  Hidden Forces ~ The Hierophant

     6.  Events Yet To Come ~ The Three of Pentacles

     7.  Surrounding Environment ~ Death

     8.   Influence Of Others ~ The Five of Wands

     9.  Spiritual Forces ~ The Seven of Cups

     10.  Final Outcome ~ The Four of Swords

I feel like I am on the right track, side-stepping conflict and heeding the strong male role-models who seem to surround me now.  This is definitely a period of dramatic transition and thoughtful development.  I’ve got my eyes peeled for positive collaborations.

I would be grateful for any of your thoughts and interpretations,

     Love Lily xx

The Seven of Swords sometimes represents the "lone-wolf" style—
the desire to run lone and free. He discovers, investigates and solves
every problem using only his own wits and resources.
He believes he's successful because he ignores
the fumbling efforts of ordinary people.

The Seven of Swords can be a sign that you or someone else
wants to be a lone wolf.

I am still musing upon my recent Spring Equinox Tarot reading.  Your thoughts and interpretations are greatly appreciated as always.

If you fancy some Tarot themed fiction my review of Sepulchre by Kate Mosse is below…

Following the success of Labyrinth, much-loved by Richard and Judy, Mosse has swiftly and decisively established herself as the female equivalent of airport favourite Dan Brown.

Sepulchre’s combination of folklore and history weaves a strong yet simple treasure-hunt mystery with Tarot magic and the lush French countryside thrown in for good measure.

The Nineteenth Century heroine trumps her modern-day counterpart and secondary characters are frustratingly underwritten for a novel with such a hefty word count, yet sensuous description and lyrical prose prevent accusations of peddling pulp and Mosse stays the right side of sentiment, writing romance for intelligent women.

A light, unchallenging but highly enjoyable read.

     See you soon Blogsprites!

If you mention The Tarot superstitious folks tend to back away uttering protective curses and crossing themselves.  I would like to dispel this nonsense.

The origins of Tarot imagery are debatable but the cards were devised as a playing deck, with four suits combining pip and court cards.

The supposedly sinister Major Arcana evolved in part so artists and crafters could showcase their skills.  Increasingly elaborate decks were commissioned by wealthy and aristocratic houses simply for the love of owning and displaying beautiful things.

Tarot images speak the universal language of mythic symbology.  The archetypal characters, concepts and scenarios tell of The Fool’s journey from innocence through experience to enlightenment and self-realisation.  Anyone familiar with Jung’s theories on The Collective Unconscious and Joseph Campbell’s deconstruction of Mythology will find nothing dangerously occult here.

The images of The Tarot serve a similar purpose to the black-splodge Rorschach Test.  This is a psychological tool which allows us to consider a given situation and order our thoughts and feelings with objectivity.  Meditating upon a Tarot spread can help us perceive things more clearly, negotiate life’s obstacles and acknowledge deep thoughts and desires.

Like many who appreciate The Tarot I perform a personal reading on each of the United Kingdom’s eight indigenous ancient festival days, the latest being Ostara, The Vernal (or Spring) Equinox which heralds the first day of springtime (Tuesday 20th March).

I will post my reading here on Friday evening.  As usual I would love to hear your thoughts x
