The diligent Christopher Reuel Tolkien seems every bit as inspired by and devoted to Middle-earth as his much celebrated father.
The Unfinished Tales: Of Númenor and Middle-earth is the first compilation of findings and fragments edited by Christopher for publication after J.R.R. Tolkien’s death.
Be warned adventurer! The more you delve into Middle-earth the further you will want to go!
The revelations concerning major characters from The Lord Of The Rings, which bridge The Hobbit to its epic sequel, will make readers’ believe they have stumbled on their very own treasure horde.
Considered editing makes it possible to simply enjoy the tales or refer quickly to the copious notes for a more enlightened, academic experience.
It is an ideal read for anyone keen for some Hobbit homework.

I want to read the entire corpus, but I wonder if it is readable. I imagine Tolkien sitting on his bed cross-legged tapping about his stories on an old type writer until the middle of the night, frantic he might not finish. And he didn’t finish. In fact, it took 2 lifetimes.

The majority are on my “to read” list too! I’ve heard that Tolkien typed all of LOTR with just 2 fingers 🙂

Too bad he didn’t have Dragon Naturally Speaking. He might have finished.

When Christopher first started publishing JRR’s tales there was quite the uproar from traditionalists–mostly because the elder Tolkien specifically requested nobody publish his unfinished tales after his death.
I am personally torn between buying the books and staying true to Tolkien’s request. From one fan, twelve years ago, he said all Christopher wants to do is make money off the legend. But, I’m not sure how much of this is substantiated.

They are fascinating to dip in to but, like DVD extras, it feels like peeping behind the curtain and spoiling the illusion. I dread to think what J.R.R. would think of the films
