Lily Wight

     Updated 06/02/2014

Kate Mosse’s début novel, Labyrinth was much-loved and promoted by Richard and Judy’s TV book club allowing Mosse to swiftly and decisively establish herself as the female answer to blockbusting airport favourite Dan Brown.

Sepulchre, Mosse’s second standalone novel, combines folklore and history to weave a simple yet compelling treasure-hunt mystery with Tarot magic and the lush French countryside thrown in for good measure.

As with Labyrinth the past and present intertwine around the comparable adventures of two female protagonists but the Nineteenth Century heroine easily trumps her modern-day counterpart whilst secondary characters are frustratingly underwritten for a novel with such a hefty word count.

It is Mosse’s descriptive and lyrical prose which prevents accusations of peddling pulp and Sepulchre stays the right side of sentiment; emerging as the thinking woman’s…

2.  The Ace of Wands

3.  The Ten of Swords (inverted)

5.  THE HANGED MAN (inverted)

6.  The Four of Swords (inverted)

7.  The Queen of Swords (inverted)

8.  The Eight of Cups

9.  The Five of Swords (inverted)

10.  The Ten of Wands (inverted)

Quick Notes

There is only one Major Arcana card suggesting The Enquirer is guiding current circumstances.  The Hanged Man appeared previously right-side up as a subconscious influence, now he is inverted in the external environment.  His role is evolving, balance is reasserting and The Hanged Man’s control is waning.

The number of inverted cards is unusually high so a situation is currently at tipping point or in the process of being turned on its head.

The Suit of Swords dominates throughout the spread suggesting the last stage of effort in action or crisis.

The Enquirer’s favourite/personal card, The Eight of Cups appears (mirroring another Cup – or Heart – card in position 1.)  This reading involves an important emotional matter-of-the-heart for The Enquirer.

The Ace of Wands also appeared in the previous spread.  Its motivational influence has now moved into the past.

There is only one Court Card, or significant “other”, in this spread.  The Queen of Swords is a frequent negative visitor for this Enquirer but her influence has waned.

WP_000011Card By Card

1.  The Enquirer / The Present ~ The Four of Cups (inverted)

Realise the need to drop all that has proved disappointing.  This is not a failure but an opportunity to grasp a bright new outlook.  Consolidate new and better emotional foundations.

2.  Past Influences ~ The Ace of Wands

A recent burst of creative energy has already instigated a new productive cycle in work and social activities.

3.  Subconscious Influences (internal/unknown) ~ The Ten of Swords (inverted)

A final surge of courage is required to break traps of defeat and betrayal and gain the edge over old problems.  Stop expecting the worst, turn away from unpleasantness and achieve the freedom to rebuild self-confidence.

4.  Secret Wishes & Desires ~ The Six of Pentacles (inverted)

A practical wish to be more selfish and less generous with a desire for more control and quicker gratification.  Live in the now!

5.  Hidden Forces (external/unknown) ~ THE HANGED MAN (inverted)

The Enquirer is no longer hanging but still tethered.  Emotional blackmail forces masochism so fight restraints imposed by the past, the self and others.

6.  Events To Come ~ The Four of Swords (inverted)

Activity will begin with renewed vigour when The Enquirer accepts that problems will always exist and success is measured not by solving them but by how they are dealt with.  The world outside starts to look more appealing; wake up Sleeping Beauty and be your own hero!

WP_0000117.  Surrounding Environment ~ The Queen of Swords (inverted)

The Enquirer has tolerated this manipulative schemer to keep the peace but boundaries have at last been set to block her controlling nature and negativity.

8.  The Influence Of Others ~ The Eight of Cups

Self-awareness minimises external influences and builds the courage to make better choices.  Move on, follow the heart’s desire and seek a truer path.

9.  Spiritual Forces (upon the environment) ~ The Five of Swords (inverted)

The Enquirer will part from their troubles when a false friend is exposed and disarmed for the sake of peace and harmony.  What feels like a loss is truly a success.  Protect yourself on the road to self-reliance.

10.  The Final Outcome ~ The Ten of Swords (inverted)

There are inherent difficulties in completing the old and starting the new simultaneously.  Forget patience, release excess burdens and responsibilities and rush to your goals.  A new beginning is tantalisingly close.

Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot, shown in a Lunatic Spread, suggests that dramatic change and the power of chance will make their move at Midwinter.

The reading begins centre left and continues anti-clockwise.  Now, let’s look more closely…

1.  The Enquirer/The Present Day ~ THE HIGH PRIESTESS (inverted)

Many Major Arcana cards appear suggesting The Enquirer has little influence over events right now; although their fate is the focus of the reading.  Previously The High Priestess appeared upright in position 7 (The Surrounding Environment) now she is upside-down because The Enquirer is at odds with uncertain surroundings and prone to compromise.  Putting other people’s opinions first and not knowing who to trust has led to emotional repression and critical self-analysis when The Enquirer would do better to have faith in their instincts and common sense. The Priestess is the ultimate feminine guide and she encourages a period of reflection to assimilate lessons learned and develop self-worth.  The world is ready for a butterfly and this caterpillar needs some peace and insight to evolve.  In the meantime The Enquirer should act as if they already are what they want to be.

2.  Past Influences ~ The Knight of Wands (inverted)

A high number of court cards suggests The Enquirer is overly influenced by others.  This Knight is The Air of Fire; someone who fuels negative thoughts into conflict and is (or shares qualities with) a youthful, rash and egotistical male.  This argumentative Knight changes plans, forces disruptions and disturbs peace of mind.  Time and effort has been wasted over-thinking the behaviour of this individual.  The situation has reached a crossroad and could be settled once and for all if bridges are burned.

3.  Subconscious Influences (internal, unknown) ~ THE HANGED MAN (inverted)

When inverted The Hanged Man no longer appears hanged but tethered.  The Enquirer is tied to the past and negative influences; held in stasis by the fear moving on.  The sense of time passing causes anxiety but The Enquirer still waits for guidance because they have lost faith in their power to exact any real change.  This makes them prone to escapism, procrastination and victimisation.  Like The Priestess (position 1) The Hanged man is missing something important or looking at the situation upside-down: self-sacrifice may not be necessary.  Once again the cards encourage The Enquirer to trust their instincts and practice self-focus in order to emerge from their trials improved and enlightened.  Perhaps those bridges have already been burned but The Enquirer is yet to perceive it.

4.  Secret Wishes & Desires ~ The Page of Wands.

The Enquirer wishes for someone to motivate or inspire them to break free from oppression and stop settling for less.  This Page is just right for the job – The Earth of Fire – someone who realises ideas with practicality.  The Page is a youthful male or female and likely to be an impulsive friend or colleague who is always on the move.  They may be voluble but their creative energy and gregarious nature is infectious and a means to good health.  They may have news or an invitation that will lead to exciting possibilities.  The Enquirer should seek their company or else strive to adopt these characteristics.

5.  Hidden Forces (external, unknown, personal) ~ The Ace of Wands

The Ace is the herald of a new beginning and a dramatic thrust of traditionally masculine power (crikey)!  Throughout September, October and November The Ace inspires the impulse to act: it is the fire and passion which generates big ideas in business and social environments.  The Page and The Ace of Wands both encourage The Enquirer toward a more dynamic outlook and environment yet it is up to The Enquirer to take the initiative, seize unexpected opportunities and turn ideas into reality.  Good work may go unnoticed but is its own reward.

6.  Events Yet To Come ~ The Eight of Cups

Patrick Valenza’s Eight of Cups has particular significance as this blog’s header image and avatar.  For The Enquirer it represents finding one’s true self again before the year is out.  The Enquirer should stop asking “why?” and simply follow their heart.  The Eight offers the opportunity to rise above expected and instinctive patterns of behaviour; to leave what is irrelevant, cut negative emotional ties and begin a more pleasurable and fulfilling journey.  Self-realisation will lead to the calm which inspires an innate trust in natural harmony.  The Enquirer will find the emotional strength to progress along the right path.

7.  The Surrounding Environment ~ The Six of Wands (inverted)

The theme of “waiting” continues because celebration is delayed when The Six of Wands is placed upside-down.  The Enquirer may lapse into an emotional slump as they doubt their decisions and feel that everything is falling apart while they struggle to start afresh, still awaiting the rewards of their labours.  This frustration will be temporary and if things are left to sort themselves out good luck will reassert itself and victory and congratulations will be forthcoming.

8.  The Influence of Others (upon the issue/surroundings) ~ The King of Cups

Kinder individuals gradually usurp negative influences as the spread evolves.  The King of Cups supports and guides The Enquirer on the true path by providing a stable environment.  He is The Fire of Water, a mature, well-established yet sensitive man who harmonises thought and feeling.  This King values safety and security for himself and his family.  He is most likely a cancerian or has a water sign temperament with fair or grey hair and bluish eyes.  The King of Cups is one of the world’s providers whose loyalty and intuition have made him well-liked and connected.  He has a strong moral centre and encourages The Enquirer to settle for nothing less than the best in others.

9.  Spiritual Forces (upon the issue/environment) ~ THE STAR (inverted)

The Star is a destination point in the Tarot journey.  It is affiliated to January and the sign of Aquarius.  This is a cold and distant star that only illuminates self-doubt, a profound force that lacks principles and humanitarianism.  The Star demands unhealthy emotional bonds but offers nothing in return: it is inflexible yet unstable and not to be wished upon.  The Enquirer’s hopes have been repeatedly dashed by this star so trust is lost.  They must stiffen their resolve and continue to follow their heart.

10.  The Final Outcome ~ THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE

The Major Arcana cards have revealed an Enquirer at odds with themselves believing that new adventures are thwarted in a hostile world because good fortune fails to recognise morality.  Hold tight however because, come Midwinter, The Wheel of Fortune is about to spin.  The Wheel represents a dynamic cycle of movement and change and the perpetual interplay between chance and destiny.  Upright in position 10 The Wheel causes an arbitrary shift in fortune; an unmissable moment of change.  This is the time to make a gamble, take a risk, grab an opportunity or make a major decision because, right now, The Enquirer’s opinion is the deciding factor on how things turn out.  The Wheel will inevitably continue to turn so The Enquirer is advised to enjoy their luck while it lasts.  What a way to end a year!

Someone is going to have a dramatic life-changing autumn (… wonder who that could be?!!)  Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot shall reveal all (Position 1. centre left then proceed anti-clockwise)…

Position 1.  The Enquirer/The Present ~ The Ten of Pentacles (inverted)

The Ten of Pentacles is the ultimate expression of practical finance and shows the cycle of wealth in its falling stage implying matters of inheritance.  The inverted card suggests the severing of ties with older generations; as role-models are no longer required or have failed to supply adequate support.  This lack of guidance may have led to disharmony as The Enquirer has lost a legacy but inherited a burden.  This is a period of time spent alone tending to repairs and maintenance at home.

Position 2.  Past Influences ~ The Eight of Pentacles.

The Enquirer has used inner-strength, persistence and  knowledge gained through study to achieve a positive frame of mind.  This industrious learning phase has led to better self-awareness and the chance to take a hobby to a new level.  Business and friendship have been mixing well lately as enthusiasm for a new project has proved infectious.  Financial rewards are likely, The Enquirer just needs to ease-up on their perfectionism!

Position 3.  Subconscious Influences ~ The Page of Cups

This particular Page shows up frequently in this Enquirer’s spreads so is likely to represent a very specific person who is constantly in the back of their mind as a source of emotional strength and comfort.  The Page is often a “boyish girl” or a “girlish boy”, someone young – in age or attitude – expressive, caring and likely to be pale, fair and born under a water-sign.  In a less literal sense the card suggests influential social occasions and the opportunity to make important contacts.

Position 4.  Secret Wishes & Desires ~ The Nine of Swords

The card shows a victim wracked by their own anxieties during another sleepless night.  Here is someone with a fundamental tendency towards depression and a strong wish to be rid of its causes and symptoms.  The Enquirer feels that their hands are tied and that they have been trapped in an untenable situation for too long: they wish to be left alone by those who bring conflict.  This may relate to the severing of ties in Position 1 and could also be tied-up with worries for or about The Page of Cups.  The Enquirer is in a positive and independent phase so is well-appointed to surmount a crisis or obstacle.

Position 5.  Hidden Forces ~ THE TOWER

This Major Arcana card brings major disruption!  The fall of the tower takes away options and forces outcomes which The Enquirer would never normally consider.  The dramatic impact of this card can never be underestimated as comfortable illusions are shattered and value-systems destroyed, leading to bewilderment.  This abrupt and sudden change may come in the form of loss, accident, upheaval, the reveal of information or betrayal yet; the lightning strike which destroys also holds the power to illuminate.  The Enquirer must rely on their foundations and principles to reserve what is of true value and leave what is false in the rubble.

Position 6.  Events To Come ~ The Four of Wands

The future holds a positive new mindset as consolidation follows the fall of obstacles.  Here is a strong if unconventional domestic partnership creating an  environment for creativity leading to tangible results.  This is the perfect peaceful space where things can grow and The Enquirer can do and be their best.

Position 7.  Surrounding Environment ~ THE HIGH PRIESTESS

There is a mighty clash of Major Arcana forces in the surrounding environment and The High Priestess will ascend when The Tower falls.  The Priestess personifies ancient female wisdom through to modern girl power!  Important mysteries and new information will be revealed to The Enquirer; making them a better judge of character and more willing to trust their inner voice and instincts.  The High Priestess ushers in a fresh start, she encourages objective communication and brings harmony from diversity.  The Enquirer will feel blessed and fortunate with a greater sense of self-worth and an ability to refuse whatever is counter-productive to their goals.  The environment is conducive to study: The Priestess is holding a book.

Position 8.  Influence of Others ~ The Nine of Cups

After the crisis of The Tower the reading has taken a most fortunate turn.  The Nine shows a genie who grants The Enquirer’s wish to be free of the anxiety which kept them awake at night.   The Enquirer can look forward to a moment in the spotlight; a busy and fulfilling time bringing new friends and possibilities.  It seems those who now surround our Enquirer bring happiness, fun and joy.

Position 9.  Spiritual Forces ~ The Queen of Swords

There’s always someone who wants to rain on your parade 😦  The Queen of Swords is usually a maternal and manipulative woman, someone strong-willed and sharp-tongued who likes to force divisions and spread bad news.  They may have been born under an air sign, or share their characteristics.  This card is often associated with bitter single women or widows whose spite is fuelled by isolation.  The Queen’s divisive nature suggests she is connected to the split and sense of isolation indicated by Position 1.

Position 10.  Final Outcome ~ The Page of Swords

It would seem that the Queen is not so alone after all!  The Page represents a young spy or rival; someone sneaky and argumentative who will prove to be a false friend.  The Queen and The Page seem intent on disrupting The Enquirer’s peaceful new environment by spreading negativity or even false rumours.  The Enquirer must keep their wits about them and not be drawn in by negativity.  The High Priestess reigns here and she advises taking no action against enemies and letting them fall by their own mistakes.  That’s good advice 😉

This week the gracious and gifted Kathy Hughes, from Turtlephoenix, has drawn a seven card Faerie Path spread for Lily Wight.  The deck used is Brian and Wendy Froud’s The Heart Of Faerie Oracle.

The Froud’s work may look familiar to regular site visitors from film fantasies, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.  You will find more of their creations in the Gallery, in the album Faerie Lore & Fairy Tales.

Position 1.  ~ The Returning

KH:  Your first card is The Returning.  You have come to rest after a whirlwind of activity.  This whirlwind of activity was not fruitless.  You  have brought something back with you and found something waiting in the calm.  Perhaps you have found a new capacity for empathy or intuition and brought it back to apply to yourself.

LW:  This already seems in tune with the previous spread you read for me with the Oracle Of Shadows & Light.  I get swept up by multi-tasking so the whirlwind metaphor is spot-on.  A lesson learned is probably the best thing you can bring back from a stressful period.  Having a little empathy for myself as well as others is good advice.

KH:  Perhaps, waiting there, was someone to take care of you for a change, or a restorative calm.  You’ve gained new insight and wisdom.  Waiting back home are people willing to listen to you.

LW:  Home can be my sanctuary but I do let others bring me their problems.  The faerie has a slightly admonishing look on her face to remind me I ought to know better!

Position 2.  The First Helper Or Challenge ~ The Child

KH:  You are curious and find joy in the little things and beauty in unexpected places.

LW:  Yes, very much so.

KH:  After a rough period you are relaxing now, letting yourself have fun and be taken care of.  See the other guy in the background?  That’s someone in your life watching over you and enjoying your happiness.  This person makes you feel safe.

LW:  I do have people to lean on,  I just have trouble releasing responsibility but I won’t be resting properly until I do.  I’ve just noticed that the quills beneath The Child’s wings look like lilies!  Perhaps she’s a lily wight too.

Position 3.  (informs the meaning of the spread) ~ In Two Minds

KH:  The Child looks at this card, seeing the one face made of two and laughing with delight.  Two faces in one!  Having it all!

LW:  I need to find the right balance between rest and activity.

KH:  The magic you brought back on your Returning (Position 1.) can help you marry two choices that are equally strong in their pulling.

Position 4.  The Second Helper Or Challenge ~ The Remembrance

KH:  The eyes of The Remembrance are sad but clear.  In this time of Returning to yourself – to the innocent, joyful child self – you are able to look at a memory that used to make you angry or hurt and see the people involved with compassion and understanding.  A terrible relationship has now become bittersweet.

LW:  Oh, that is very specific.  I have been swept up by someone else’s problems which left me feeling worn out and tarnished.  Something that pulled me away from my home and myself.

KH:  You are able to live in the two minds of your mixed feelings comfortably.  You are able to find the valuable lessons in the pain and the joy as well.

LW:  I feel that this is The Challenge in the spread and The Child is The Helper.  I have good memories from childhood that recent problems shouldn’t be allowed to spoil.

Position 5.  ~ The Challenge

LW:  Yep, Remembrance is definitely a challenge.

KH:  The Challenge is telling you that now, since you have reached clarity, compassion and peace with your memories you must take those feelings and use them to make changes in your present.  What do you want to do differently in your interactions with others?  With yourself?

Position 6.  The Heart Of The Matter ~ The Gift

LW:  Could this be what I have brought back from the whole experience?

KH:  The Gift wants you to know that no matter what happens, or how discombobulated you felt, you have a gift for wisdom and intuition.

LW:  As a Celtic Mythologist sylvan gods have great significance to me.  It’s interesting to see a female interpretation.

KH:  She wants to give you the gift of reassurance.  You can relax in the knowledge that everything will turn out right.

LW:  Yes.  When we try to control things too much we lose touch and faith in the concept of synchronicity.

Position 7.  The Final Message Or Gift ~ The Lady Of Sorrows

KH:  The Lady Of Sorrows is a conqueror.  She tames the sorrows and turns them into sources of strength and inspiration.  She has been through a lot – as you can tell by the scar on her cheek – but she is still lovely.  She is kind and her methods are gentle.  She is your guardian as you leave the Faerie Realm.  She will remind you that forgiveness is more valuable than being right and that you can let go of the bad and keep the good.

LW:  Bearing scars with dignity whilst letting go of past ills.  This is incredibly appropriate.  Thank you, Kathy.

The wise and insightful Kathy Hughes, from Turtlephoenix, has been kind enough to introduce our own cartomancer, Lily Wight to the Oracle Of Shadows & Light.

This enchanting fortune-telling deck, comparable to The Tarot, was devised by Lucy Cavendish and Jasmine Beckett-Griffith.

Kathy (KH) drew a four card Hidden & Revealed Spread for Lily (LW) and you can see the results below…

Position 1.  What Is Hidden? ~ Ghost Of The Pumpkin Patch

KH:  This little girl is your inner child.  She is asking you to count your blessings.  I have the feeling that when you are overwhelmed you forget your inner resources; your impeccable aesthetic sense, your childlike sense of wonder and play and, in low self-esteem moments, you forget your purity and kindness.

LW:  The mournful expression on the ghost girl’s face perfectly captures my tendency to put myself last on my list of priorities.  The modern world is demanding and complex so it’s easy to feel lost, small and insignificant.  Your compliments have helped me to feel better already!  I need to take better care of my inner child.

KH:  She also wants to remind you that you don’t exist in a vacant field.  If you did you wouldn’t be so busy.  You have loved ones to delegate tasks to.

LW:  The Ghost is insubstantial; not really present.  This card has touched on the difficulties of feeling morose and disconnected.

Position 2.  What Is Revealed? ~ Carnivorous Greenhouse

LW:  Another hostile environment!

KH:  You are an extremely curious person who wants to drown in awesome, beautiful things.

LW:  Oh yes, I think my blog reflects that, but those particular “lilies” look dangerous.

KH:  You have trouble saying “no”, because you are a kind, loving person who wants to nurture everyone.

LW:  I sometimes get called “Mama” at work because I try to look after everyone.  Those plants look likely to bite the hand that feeds!  I went to the library recently to look for a book about learning to say “no”, but I didn’t take it out because I thought I’d be too busy to read it ~ that’s sadly ironic.

KH:  If your own sanity and health don’t convince you to give yourself a break and learn to say “no” maybe this will:  if you spread yourself too thin you can’t give your loved ones or interests the attention they deserve.

LW:  I need to weed out the plants that are likely to bite.  Perhaps I’ll go back for that book after all.

Position 3.  Why Am I Drawing This To Myself? ~ The Angel Of Time

LW:  The background looks like the background of my blog.

KH:  I look at The Angel Of Time’s eyes and I see a woman who likes a challenge.

LW:  If I’m the Pumpkin Patch Ghost on the inside then this is who I would like to be on the outside.  I feel at my strongest when I’m free to write and work on my creative endeavours, but the card says I’m working too hard.

KH:  You like to study everything and get to know everyone.  You want to make time your bitch (pardon my language)!

LW:  You’ve got me.  I’m a control freak.  I come from an academic background.  It defines me more than anything else.

Position 4.  What Should I Do Now? ~ Angel De Los Muertos

LW:  Now that is synchronicity!  Dia De Los Muertos (the Mexican Day Of The Dead/All Souls’ Day) is my birthday.  I already feel this card is telling me to simply be true to myself.

KH:  When I see the Angel De Los Muertos in this spread I see her as the opposite of the Ghost Of The Pumpkin Patch.  They are very helpful to each other.  Angel De Los Muertos is warm and extroverted and Ghost Of The Pumpkin Patch is cool, introspective and shy.  They balance each other.  If you take time to be introspective, to sit and do nothing, or take a long walk, or do some quiet yoga, colours will be more vibrant to you, textures warmer.

LW:  There is a very consistent and specific message in this spread.  I try to do too much and end up feeling lost and misused so life is a constant struggle for balance.  The cards evolve to show me at my best and suggest I could actually achieve more by taking on a little less.

KH:  You’ll be better able to separate the gems from the beans in terms of how you want to spend your time and enjoy your active times more because you will know yourself better.

LW:  Separate the gems from the beans – I love that.  Thank you so much, Kathy.

NEXT WEEK ~ Tarot Masterclass With Kathy Hughes & Lily Wight #2

Here are your latest insights for the season, courtesy of Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot, cast in the Lunatic Spread (Position 1. left-centre, continue anti-clockwise)…

1.  The Enquirer/Present Day ~ The King Of Swords (inverted)

The previous spread featured The Knight Of Swords (inverted) suggesting a continuing situation of conflict.  The Enquirer feels controlled and powerless in their own life with a need to defend themselves from an unfair judge.  This King is angry and over-reactive with a mind to spread dishonest gossip.  The Enquirer has genuine concern for The King; empathising with his instability and refusing to play mind-games could lead to the necessary detachment to break free from a stalled relationship.

2.  Past Influences ~ The Six Of Pentacles

Distributing resources is an act requiring discrimination.  In the upright position the lucky 6 suggests a wise investment in which an act of generosity or assistance has led to a binding relationship.  This card is a reminder to balance give and take; as too much control and responsibility can create underlying tension in a partnership.  This may give clues into what has gone wrong with the relationship implied in Position 1.  What follows could offer a solution.

3.  Subconscious Influences (internal, unknown) ~ The Four Of Cups

The Enquirer is clinging to past unhappiness and choosing to brood in an isolated tower of their own making!  Obsessing about the pain caused by lost loves has made The Enquirer blind to their achievements and closed to the potential of other friendships.  The picture on the card is perfectly clear;  throwing away the empty cup will leave hands free to reach for other possibilities and the key to escape has been in The Enquirer’s keeping all along.  Knowledge of the need for emotional self-awareness is buried deep in the subconscious – sometimes, when you have done all you can to fix a situation, the best and only option is to walk away.

4.  Secret Desires & Wishes ~ THE HIGH PRIESTESS (inverted)

This Enquirer’s wishes are frequently powerful and destructive.  Repressed feelings and guarding the secrets of others has made them long to smash their good intentions and subvert their positive instincts.  Here is a wish to be rid of problems rather than solve them – to be less emotional and caring.  The Enquirer is probably known to be compassionate and amiable but their fantasy is to act the opposite!  The low number of Major Arcana cards in the spread suggest The Enquirer is positioned to start taking back control of their life.

5.  Hidden Forces (external, unknown) ~ The Eight Of Swords

The cards in Positions 3, 4 and 5 all suggest a tussle to break free from stagnant conflict and external control; with cards 3 and 5 revealing opportunities to escape negative circumstances via small and unlooked-for windows of opportunity.  We are not to blame for the faults of others; The Enquirer should not be afraid to reach out, ask for help and seek better company.  Once more the best advice is to drop the cup, leave the tower (even if it takes a fall from the window!) and walk away.

6.  Events To Come ~ The Five Of Cups

The Enquirer has outgrown a relationship that once brought happiness.  The picture shows The Enquirer finding their “off switch” and literally blocking their ears to negativity and turning their back on a soured situation.  It seems certain that The Enquirer will at last break free and feel less burdened and controlled.

7.  Surrounding Environment ~ The Page Of Cups

Dropping a negative relationship creates more time and space for a positive one and there is no better company than The Page Of Cups; a youthful, imaginative and caring guide for the lost.  The Page is shown returning a fish to water and receiving a pearl for his/her kindness. This is an example of a perfectly balanced give and take relationship.  The Page understands The Enquirer’s need for a loving, natural and more nurturing environment.  Pages sometimes bring invitations to uplifting social events; parties, weddings – although the cup and water suggest a christening.   Here is the better company The Enquirer can rely on.

8.  The Influence Of Others ~ The Two Of Pentacles

Now that The Enquirer is free from their “tower” they need positive examples of how to handle difficult situations and conflicting schedules.  Someone may offer a new course of action or release The Enquirer from a commitment that was troubling them, either way an end to conflict is likely.

9.  Spiritual Forces ~ The Ace Of Cups (inverted)

Despite good company and positive influences The Enquirer will not be able to ignore the lingering sense that their foundations have been rocked, love has been lost and abrupt changes have taken their toll.  A search for resolution and clarity has proved fruitless and loving someone unworthy has left insecurity behind.  It has been fascinating to track the images of cups in this spread, the suit of emotions and the heart.  The Enquirer has had to throw away and ignore empty or poisoned cups but has been carried to safety is the cup guarded by The Page.  The Ace is the single remaining cup.  It is upside down but The Enquirer must cherish and refill it by being kind to themselves and saying “no” to harmful influences.

10.  The Final Outcome ~ The Ace Of Swords (inverted)

There has been a long struggle with no resolution.  It is hard to accept absent closure but this has been making The Enquirer feel anxious, edgy and alone for too long.  The Ace’s blade points towards The Enquirer so they still feel a need to defend themselves or put themselves in hostile environments.  The cards have told The Enquirer to let go, to turn their back on the hurt caused by conflict, to escape and move on.  Better company is available but they must choose to turn to it and release old heartache to find peace and calm.
