Jamie Dornan may have bagged the much coveted role of sado-hunk Christian Grey but it is his little known co-star, Dakota Johnson, who is currently Google’s most searched for celeb.  So here she is,  Ms. Anastasia Steele, in this month’s movie adaptation of E. L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey.

You’ll soon be seeing ALOT more of her 😉

*Dakota Mayi Johnson was born 4th October 1989 in Austin, Texas, USA.

*Dakota is the daughter of actors, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson and the stepdaughter of Antonio Banderas.

*Dakota made her acting début in Crazy In Alabama (1999) directed by Antonio Banderas and starring with her mother, Melanie and half-sister, Stella Banderas.

*Dakota signed to IMG Models in 2006 and became Miss Golden Globe the same year.

*Film credits include a brief  *ahem* but memorable scene in Facebook movie, The Social Network.

article-0-1D7B01A900000578-531_634x607     J.J. Abrams appears to be following in George Lucas’s footsteps by casting relatively unknown younglings alongside the familiar older cast.

Precious little is known about British actress, Daisy Ridley who has a handful of TV credits to her name in shows such as Casualty, Silent Witness and Mr. Selfridge.  All that looks set to change however following a role in The Inbetweeners 2 and a certain Sci Fi saga that a few fans will be waiting until 2015 to see.

Here is Daisy’s slideshow *WARNING contains boobage!!*

140429164103-01-new-star-wars-cast-horizontal-gallery     You’ll have to wait until December 2015 to get a brand new Star Wars: Episode VII sized Christmas present so there’s plenty of time to acquaint yourself with the next generation of stars from that galaxy far, far away.

Recently released cast details reveal nothing about character names and roles but British actor John Boyega (22) is most likely to fill the role of hot young hero whilst hoping to escape the saga’s infamous Hamill-Christensen curse.

Pure trash of course but also a fascinating insight into celebrity culture’s evolution throughout the noughties.

As the founding editor of Heat magazine Frith makes for a flawed and fabulous narrator, jealous of the success of fellow publications, often derogatory about the stars he refers to as “playthings” and covetous of fame.   Frith is also fiercely loyal to his team and dedicated to a refreshing and  worthy ethos to de-bunk celebrity myth.
Ironically and unfortunately, normalising celebrities created a space for ordinary folk from reality shows to seize the spotlight.  The subsequent rise of savvy PRs has enabled celebs to play the once revelatory magazines at their own game.

It’s a fascinating insight into a unique period of modern history by a smart, flawed guy who was actually there.

Peter Jackson has a penchant for British thespians and BBC drama serials so signing top toff totty Benedict Cumberbatch to provide voice and motion for The Hobbit’s dragon Smaug was hardly a surprise.

More intriguing is Cumberbatch confessing to his role as “The Necromancer”, who – as Rings fans know – is non-other than Big Bad Sauron himself.

Jackson originally intended to reveal Sauron’s face – as Annatar, his Elvish-guise – during a dual with Aragorn towards the end of The Return Of The King.  The footage was considered too confusing and distracting and only made it as far as the DVD extras (you can watch it below).

Now, with a distinctly Elvish-looking actor properly cast and the last film in The Hobbit trilogy leading Gandalf towards a…

Will the Christian Grey casting controversy ever end?

After keeping fans guessing for over a year Charlie Hunnam has quit his coveted role in Fifty Shades of Grey within weeks of author E. L. James’ official announcement.

Hunnam has cited his contractual obligation to TV show Sons of Anarchy as the reason for his departure, but did no one think to check the small print first?

With the role now wide-open that marketing dream rumour-mill is sure to be turning. Perhaps there is still a chance for fan favourite Matt Bomer after all.

Dakota Johnson (the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) remains onboard as Anastasia Steele, following news that Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct what will undoubtedly be one of the hottest and hotly anticipated movies of 2014.

Movie fans may sense a serious disturbance in The Force this Saturday when Darth Vader’s shuttle arrives at Hull’s Movie Buffs Collectors Fair.

Actor Dave Prowse, who gave Darth Vader his imposing presence in the original Star Wars Trilogy, will be visiting the city for the very first time to meet fans, sign autographs and enjoy some Yorkshire hospitality.

The former Green Cross Code Man will be joined by special effects gurus and Jabba The Hutt puppeteers, Toby Philpott and John Coppinger, who have worked on a variety of memorable movies including Harry Potter, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.

Movie Buffs is the seventh film and cult TV fair hosted by Hullywood Entertainment, an independent Yorkshire-based events company launched five years ago with support from The Prince’s Trust.

This Saturday’s event will be held in the first floor atrium of Hull’s Prospect Shopping Centre from 10am – 4pm and will also feature a spectacular array of trade stands and exhibits.  Charity costume groups, such as the world-renowned UK Garrison and the UK Ghostbusters will be mingling with visitors alongside a variety of cosplayers.  Movie Buffs events have become well-known for their party atmosphere and visitors are always welcome to turn-up in fancy dress.

So here it is, our first look at the next installment of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth multiplex pleaser.

Despite the portentous dialogue snippets it seems much lighter than The Two Towers – a fellow sufferer of middle movie syndrome – and more action-oriented than it’s predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

When The Hobbit was first mooted Jackson declined the director’s chair, fearing perhaps that his confidence and experience would lead him to “do a George Lucas” and start tinkering self-indulgently and retconning his screen creation to its detriment.

Alterations and additions are always necessary when adapting a story from one medium to the next but they are only truly successful if they integrate seamlessly with the original author’s vision:  we have a trailer that looks more like Peter Jackson’s Hobbit than Tolkien’s.

If Jackson wants to make an Elf movie wouldn’t he be better adapting The Silmarillion?  Poor old Bilbo scarcely gets a look-in as we are treated to tree-running Timotei models who skid into shot with the enthusiasm of sugar-dosed kids on polished floors.  Back in his Rings days Jackson wisely cut leaked scenes of “Action Arwen” kicking Orc at Helm’s Deep after incurring the wrath of Tolkien fans.  Now it is hoped those same fans will accept original invention, Tauriel – a red-haired female Wood Elf who has achieved warrior status decades before poor Éowyn has to sneak off to Minas Tirith in drag.

The biggest surprise is the full close-up reveal of Smaug’s head.  Despite the opportunity to allow the art department’s imagination to run riot the trailer delivers a very conventional-looking dragon – unless he’s hiding a serpentine body or a clockwork limb.  This may be a way to get the critique over and done with so, by December, audiences can relax and enjoy the flying, fire-breathing and vocal stylings of Benedict Cumberbatch.

We revealed here some months ago that Cumberbatch had been cast as  Sauron The Necromancer (link to the article below) yet, whichever evil nasty he is portraying New Line seem desperate to keep Cumberbatch’s contributions under wraps.

It’s nice to catch a glimpse of Luke Evans although such a pivotal character might have warranted a bigger fanfare and what about “sexy” Dwarf Kili – and all the other supporting Dwarves for that matter.  We need a longer trailer, but share your thoughts on this one while we wait…

Streaming and downloads are fine for Minimalists but how can you really own a movie until it’s sitting on your shelf for nosy visitors to judge and define you by?

Video cassettes are dangerous – especially if a dusty box-full of them falls on your head when you’re rummaging through the attic – and V/H/S takes us back to the days when terrifying box art damaged childhoods, when James Woods morphed into a human video recorder and Sadako crawled all the way from Japan, straight out of the TV and into your living-room.

V/H/S is an anarchic, schizophrenic horror showcasing promising young directors with a mixed-bag of shorts tied-up with a warning – if you must break into a dead guy’s creepy home don’t watch his videotapes.

Like all anthologies the quality varies and the tonal shifts are disorienting but, on the plus side, nothing outstays its welcome long enough for you to question why anyone would convert their phone footage or Skype conversations onto clunky old video cassettes.

The best found footage movies find innovative ways to incorporate the act and products of filmmaking into the plot itself; so a seemingly routine teen slasher becomes sharp and memorable through clever use of that familiar and idiosyncratic chewed-tape distortion.  Meanwhile, Generation YouTube Trick or Treaters disrupt a dubious ritual yet continue to record the mayhem and danger – laughing when they ought to be screaming.

V/H/S is a perfect combination of old school and experimentation in search of stronger themes.  The miscreants in the opening are suitably punished for their criminal misuse of technology and most of the stories are driven by strong female protagonists but these are issues left hanging in the wake of a simpler urge to shock and entertain.

Sequel S-V/H/S is scheduled for a July 2013 release and with lessons learned, a bigger budget and more of what works we could be looking at a five-star follow-up.

Verdict ~ A rich and diverse eye assault of memorable images to leave you pondering.  Yep, there’s still life in the old tape yet!

*WARNING* Red Band Trailer, not for little eyes!
