*Postage stamps, matches, refrigerators, lightbulbs, antiseptic, inflatable tyres, cars, buses, telephones, iron bridges, railways, cameras, bandstands and promenades are all Victorian inventions.

*After the death of Prince Albert (1861) Queen Victoria dressed in black and had fresh clothes and a wash-stand prepared for Albert every day.

*She also spoke of “the mad, wicked folly of women’s rights”.  No comment.

*Only two British monarchs have reached their Diamond Jubilee.  Victoria celebrated hers in 1897.

*Britain and China went to war… over Opium trafficking!

*A large part of the world still speaks English today because of Victoria’s empire.

*The Commonwealth is made up of countries which were once under British rule.

*The River Thames was so thick with sewage that paddle-steamers could hardly move.  After 30 years of work a new improved sewage system was completed in 1875.  It is still in use today.

*Victorian architecture favoured Medieval Gothic and Classical…

Carr’s self-deprecating camp infuses this autobiography which unfortunately stops short before his fame gets started, suggesting all the good stuff has been saved for later volumes.  It’s a shame because despite the good humour there is nothing remarkable here, unless you count the fact that Carr is surprisingly well-adjusted for a comedian.

Alan’s formative years seem no different to those of any ordinary middle-class thirty-something;  nice family, depressingly menial part-time jobs, a pointless degree and some fun holidays.

Unfortunately the opportunity to offer advice on the perils of building a stand-up career is overlooked, with Carr being unduly brief and modest about such a difficult profession.

If you like Carr you’ll like this, but the best is probably yet to come.

Pure trash of course but also a fascinating insight into celebrity culture’s evolution throughout the noughties.

As the founding editor of Heat magazine Frith makes for a flawed and fabulous narrator, jealous of the success of fellow publications, often derogatory about the stars he refers to as “playthings” and covetous of fame.   Frith is also fiercely loyal to his team and dedicated to a refreshing and  worthy ethos to de-bunk celebrity myth.
Ironically and unfortunately, normalising celebrities created a space for ordinary folk from reality shows to seize the spotlight.  The subsequent rise of savvy PRs has enabled celebs to play the once revelatory magazines at their own game.

It’s a fascinating insight into a unique period of modern history by a smart, flawed guy who was actually there.

**WARNING**  not for little eyes or the easily alarmed

titania     By The Power of Greyskull!!!  Take a look at Dame Judi Dench’s Titania!

This black and white still of Britain’s best-loved actress “in the altogether” for Peter Hall’s adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1968) was deemed so raunchy and shocking that Pinterest took it down!

Now Lily Wight knows if it’s in black and white AND scripted by Shakespeare it must be Art so there is no shame whatsoever in taking a moment to enjoy Dame Judi’s seldom seen – but mighty fine – Titania 🙂

Who needs a dose of cute and fluffy when there are gifs this good which also explain why current reports of vampire attacks have dwindled to… well, nothing.

According to ancient folklore counting seeds or grains of rice was sure to keep vampires busy until morning however, since we installed domestic electricity, they are obsessed with light switches instead.  So next time you wake up in the middle of the night and notice you’ve left a light on somewhere just remember… it might not have been you.

It is only the snow and not the vampires that glitter in this must-see Scandinavian horror gem.  No, we’re not talking about Let The Right One In – the thinking vamp-groupie’s vamp movie – but Anders Banke’s Frostbite (2006) known intermittently as Frostbitten (and Frostbiten in Swedish) just to add a little confusion.

This is what happens when you drop old school scary bloodsuckers into a town of restless youths enduring 24/7 darkness.  Check out the trailer and line-up a full viewing for Halloween.

There’s a great movie you might have missed every month at Lily Wight ~ The Arcade of Arts & Arcana.

Star Wars: The Complete Vader is an excellent coffee table book from Random House at a bargain price!

There are plenty of glossy images, pullouts and keepsakes with a surprisingly thorough text, so even hardcore Star Wars fans should see or read something new 🙂
